Well, in the five years this site has been closed, I settled on making a documentary about men's fitness as my first aiming-to-be-professional feature-length film project.
It all started because of something someone said here in the Hardcore forums, actually. Long ago on one of the video journals I posted, one of you muscle monsters (I forget who) basically said, "If the health films I had to watch in school had been this entertaining, I would have remembered everything a lot better." The notion grew on me, then, to take my personal style of video presentation and use it to motivate and educate men on getting themselves in better shape. Given the obesity epidemic, and the growing plague of "Body Positivity" that is encouraging people to embrace an unhealthy lifestyle of gluttony and laziness, my goal is to pack within a 2-hour film an entire tutorial on nutrition and exercise that will equip a total newcomer with what he needs to get off the couch and into a more fit body. Not a perfect body, not a competition physique, but basically fit.
The problem I see in the film world is that we have plenty of films to MOTIVATE: "Pumping Iron", "Generation Iron", "The Perfect Physique", etc. And then there are plenty of YouTube videos that EDUCATE. But motivational films like "Pumping Iron" have no educational information in them, and just about all of the educational videos are either incredibly boring talking heads or sloppy homemade videos by overenthusiastic "influencers" who have no sense of cinematic arts. I want to bring it all together in one package: Actual teaching on what to eat, how to lift; motivational content inspiring men to get on it; and all presented in an entertaining way, with plenty of humor thrown in to make it engaging from start to finish.
And so, all of that boiled together into the project I have started filming this past February: "The Better Body Starter Kit For Men".
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
BE IN IT: I guess I'm posting not just to say, "I'm doing a Thing!" I'm posting on the very slim chance that some of you might be reasonably close enough to Oregon, or I might travel reasonably close enough to you, to join up and get you on camera for one of the many many interviews I want to do with guys out there who are fit, or working to become so. I'd love to have a wide variety of men in the film giving their perspectives on why they got started, what their goals are, etc. Old men, young men, everyone from beastly bodybuilders down to the guy who just goes for a swim to keep himself lean. If I do get a sizable tax refund this year I will be working to get outside of Oregon and do some traveling for interviews outside just my local area, and I will post any travel destinations here in case you live near there.
HELP FUND IT: I won't turn this thread into a cheap sales pitch, but yes, I am crowdfunding this project. Alongside some of my own money, donors have helped me raise about $3,500 so far, which was enough to get the 4K camera and get started. I have three "Ordinary Men" interviews, and one with a professional nutritionist, and will gather more soon. The local part is easy and doesn't cost me anything, but if it's going to be a film worth watching, there will be costs coming up and I will welcome any support along the way. Drop me a note if this interests you at all.
Okay, I have to get to a meeting! Check out www.BBSKForMen.com and thanks for reading!
