Sarms are SARMS – Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators
Ever felt tired of going to the gym everyday with the minimal result? Ever thought of choosing the easy way out? Ever wanted to pick up the needle and speed up the entire process? What stops you?
A lot of people think of boosting their fitness training by using steroids. And why not when you can look like a professional bodybuilder in no time with the least amount of effort. But it's not that easy. Although steroids may seem like the shortcut to fitness, they cause irreversible problems that often way out the benefits.
Steroids are usually injected in the body in the form of testosterone to increase protein synthesis which in turn increases muscle size, strength and density. Furthermore, steroids also help to maintain muscle size when bodybuilders go on a diet to achieve a lean body stature. However, these are only the anabolic effects of steroids. Unfortunately, Individuals who use steroids are also faced with the androgenic side effects which are associated with the hormonal imbalance, cardiovascular problems and interference with secondary sex characteristics. Steroids are equally likely to
cause a decrease in sperm count and infertility as they are to increase muscle size. Hence, this one to one ratio of positive and negative effects of steroids makes it a risky option for a bodybuilder to boost their growth.
Scientists are now looking for a better alternative to steroids that produces the same results with minimal side effects and the closest that they have come to so far is SARMs.
SARMs is short for selective androgen receptor modulator. Their chemical structure is very similar to anabolic steroids which mean that they have the same impact on muscles as steroids but what's so special then? While SARMS have the same positive impact on the body, they reduce the side effects to a ratio as high as 90 to 1 which is quite something. So now you can have the same muscle growth and increase in strength without the risk of baldness or infertility.
SARMs, however, have not yet been clinically approved and are available in the market for research purposes only and not for normal human consumption. Some of the most popular SARMs are:
- MK-2866
- LGD-4033
- LGD-3303
- GSX-007
- GW-501516
Another issue when it comes to steroids is their addictive nature. Once you start taking steroids, to maintain shape and muscle growth, you need to continue use because most individuals develop dependence syndrome. SARMs however, do not cause that problem and researchers are working towards reducing its withdrawal side effects. Unlike steroids, SARMs do not cause psychological and biological addiction in users.
How SARMs work?
To simply explain the functioning of SARMs lets divide the body into good and bad cells. Bad cells are muscle cells that we want to target to stimulate growth and build strength. Good cells are all the other cells of the body. Now although we think of steroids as heroes who bomb the bad cells, they also cause a lot of collateral damage because of the good cells that they harm. This collateral damage then leads to kidney diseases, heart diseases, cancer and hormonal issues. In the case of an overdose, steroids may also cause nose bleeding, muscle tear and problems in joints. Collateral damage also includes harmful effects on a central nervous system which may lead to psychosis, depression and aggression. SARMs, on the other hand, reduce collateral damage by specifically targeting only the bad cells. So they have a greater affinity to bad cells (muscles and bones) compared to other cells situated in the liver, heart or prostate. However, it should be noted that SARMs do increase the risk of cancer.
Why bodybuilders use SARMs?
Although SARMs have fewer side effects compared to regular steroids, they are not as strong and have a comparatively less impact on muscles. However, due to the reduced health risks associated with SARMs (and reduced risk of detection), bodybuilders now use SARMs as a supplement to training and steroids.
Usually, bodybuilders who have no previous experience with steroids start off with SARMs to get their body used to the effects of exogenous testosterone. So SARMs are useful as trial drugs.
SARMs are also used to boost the effect of steroids without taking in excessive steroids. This is because SARMs appear to be safer than the anabolic steroids and are easier to recover from.
Keeping all of this in mind, it seems that SARMs are safer to use than steroids. However, that does not mean that they have no side effects at all. Excessive use of SARMs can cause cancer and SARMs are known to blunt production of natural testosterone (although this effect is less compared to steroids). Also, the added effect of SARMs is not as strong as that of steroids.
Moreover, research is yet to be done on SARMs to test any long-term side effects of the drug. Hence, when deciding whether to use steroids or SARMs or keeping it natural, one should evaluate both the advantages and disadvantages of the available options to make an informed, responsible decision.
