I doubt it's bad sterilization practices going by what he's saying. If they're using the same bottle but sterilizing and not sharing pins, there shouldn't be any issues. I'm thinking it's most likely a reaction to something in the gear if one guy swells up and the other doesn't. Maybe EO?
And as far as the quad pins; that's happened to me where I'd be almost handicapped from a bad pin even with excellent sterilization techniques. I'd pin then the next day it's red and hot to the touch. 2 days later I can barely walk. It seemed like the oil went lower into my quad just above the knee cap and it would last for 7-10 days. I have no idea what caused that phenomenon but it has happened to me maybe 8-10 times over the last 7-8 years. Now I rarely pin the quads and mostly hit delts and pecs due to scar tissue everywhere else.
