Pgp? Why are we all not using this?

Coming from a darker background, where this is the norm, and for good reason. Im just a little dumbfounded as to why such a critical security feature seems to be missing from all these various BB communities. Just food for thought.

Hahaha.. Basically each person has a public and a private key.

So you would have public and private and so would i. Now each one is unique, and theu are generated one time only if i remember right.

So say we want to have a conversation that noone else could possiply see, i would type out a message, then copy the text, encode it using your public key. The software spits out some encoded text, i copy that and email it to you along with my public key.

When you recieve the mail, you copy the text and decrypt it with your private key. Only your unique private key can decrypt a message encoded with your public key.

So we share our public key with those we wish to communicate, but never share the private key, or its password.

This is about as secure as we could hope for right now

Yeah I got that far Digger. I've read about this before but I don't understand why you say it is missing from here?. It's something that would be used via a secure email, not a forum. We already use SSL here at hardcore.

Yea your right. It really falls under a best practices concept. Im not trying to single out this forum, as i havent seen it stressed by any of the others im on either. Just thought it might be a good practice to protect our brothers. Sending your addy in plain text is just asking for trouble. But i agree, its use would be primarily limited to customers and vendors private comms.

I think most people use email that has PGP like countermail and other encrypted email. If there were questions asked about PGP I would more then be happy to help here at hardcore-underground...

I agree with this thread. PGP should be in use by everyone on the boards.

PGP is an encryption method that uses public keys to encrypt data that can then only be decrypted by the correspoinding private key. It is fairly easy to set up and use. Basically, you install a PGP tool, such as the one from SourceForge http://ppgp.sourceforge.net/

Then you want to create a public key. The public key will also come with a private key (only you will have the private key). You then use your public key to allow any users to send you encrypted messages with the use of your public key - repeat public key - never give out your priate key. A user then can write any text and encrpyt and send to you using your public key and only you (having the private key) can decrpyt the message. If you need to correspond privately with someone, just ask for their PGP public key and encrypt what you want to send to them using their public key - again only the recipient having the corresponding private key can decrpyt the message.

Feel free to PM if anyone has questions.
