So turns out I've fucked up my sacrum pretty good...big herniation. Pain was really bad in lower back and left leg for a few weeks, which is what led me to get an MRI.

Saw the spine doc yesterday and he is sending me to physical therapy 2x/week starting next week. No spine loading exercises like squats, deadlifts, bent over rows, etc. For 4-6 weeks for now.

The goal is to not have surgery because I'm only 29 and back surgeries are a mother. Anyone have experience with a similar disc issue? How did you overcome it?

Thanks!

I had a bad Lumbago( hipper extension in lumbar area) during my late teens i was a karate competitor ad i was in a lot of pain for about a year. I will keep you in my prayers beloved..you will be okay...no surgery

Thanks buddy, really appreciate it.

Therapy and epidural injections worked about three years for me. I ended up having surgery on my L5/S1 and actually glad that I did it feel 1000x times better now!

What kind of procedure did you have? How long were you out of the gym for post-op?

I had a 22 mm herniation on l4-l5 last year. Worst my Doc had ever seen not being in a serious accident. Said it was crazy that I was in no pain and had control of my bladder and bowels. I had foot tingling in left left toes and slight calf weakness. Most people with that big of a herniated disc are hospitalized. Yes that bad. He simply stated, due to your conditioning and lifestyle your body is strong enough to work through it. I personally know some guys that were laid up pissing in bottles with 8 mm and 4mm herniations. To put it in perspective.

My Doc is highly respect here in LA and does countless professional athletes. If you do surgery, remember back surgery is no fucking joke.....go to a good, qualified doctor who knows about bodybuilding lifting etc and do your homework.

Had a microdiscectomy feb 20th 2017. My avi is from July. So 5 months later. Recovery for the first month and PT sucked but I was in the gym by April.

Serious back injuries never go away. They heal, but they are never the same and the fear of being re-injured never really goes away.

Deadlifts, heavy squats are a thing of the past for me. I’m still big as fuck, strong, and lean without those lifts. Yes I wish I could do them but the risk of injury simply isn’t worth a lifelong debilitating injury. Longevity and aesthetics is my focus...... not strength and power.

I had a lacetomnoy/discsectomony l5/s1 was 8mm herniation and was a outpatient surgery. I had it at a top teaching hospital in the world. I was back to light lifting in 4 months. Full recovery was probably little over 6 months but now I’m a lot better off. Have friends from the military with same issue who opted out of sugery for numerous reasons. They are in worst shape now than I am. I had a positive outcome for mine hope the best to you!

Could not agree more I have same l4 l5 injury plus 2 in my neck. Form is absolutely critical as is posture! when it comes to deadlift squat and rows just listen to your body do them with proper technique and slowly build your strength. I do high volume lower weight and don’t have a problem most of the time. Also make sure your core is strong!
